Recreational Kayaking Basics Class
July 18, 5:00 pm$60
Learn skills and increase your knowledge of the sport of kayaking with this introduction to Recreational Kayaking class. This class is the first step in helping you become a solid kayaker by focusing on basic skills, knowledge and fundamentals.
This Recreational Kayaking Basics class is designed for paddlers who have an interest in learning the proper techniques when kayaking, have already purchased a recreational kayak (under 14 feet long, over 25″ wide with large cockpit opening and minimal flotation) or for those people who are certain that they will only want to paddle on small, inland lakes and slow-moving rivers. In 2 ½ hours we will cover the basic strokes needed to maneuver your kayak efficiently. Students will not be asked to perform a wet exit, and there are no rescue or re-entry skills taught in this class. This class can be taken as a very basic introduction to the sport.
If you have not yet purchased a kayak of your own and have paddled very few different boats, you may want to consider the “Introduction to Sea Kayaking” class as it gives a more comprehensive introduction to the sport of kayaking. The Introduction to Sea Kayaking class is not taught at Milwaukee Kayak Company but it is taught by Sherri, who teaches this class. The skills you will learn in the Introduction to Sea Kayaking class are built for waters where the skills you will learn above would be necessary such as on the Great Lakes, large lakes and rivers, or whitewater rivers.
Skills and Information covered in the Introduction to Recreational Kayaking class include:
• Introduction of equipment – kayaks, paddles and life jackets
• Safety considerations in using recreational kayaks
• Entering and exiting your kayak
• Forward stroke
• Reverse stroke
• Stopping your kayak
• Forward and reverse sweeps for turning
• Draw strokes to move a kayak sideways
